No Free Travels For Old Folks – Lui Tuck Yew

Special but not that special….

SINGAPORE: There are no immediate plans to make MRT and bus rides completely free for senior citizens, given the discounts already available and the significant additional cost burden on taxpayers and other commuters it would have, said Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew on Tuesday (Jan 20).

He explained that to give free travels to all senior citizens would have incurred a cost of about S$200 million annually. Presently there are discounts of 25 per cent to 59 per cent off adult fares for all senior citizens who are 60 years and above. Senior citizens who travel frequently can also cap their transport expense by using the S$60 monthly concession pass.

“Aiyah. I am not surprised by this,” said Mr Yap, a 79-yr old retired teacher.

“How to squeeze water from a rock?” he added.
