Either way, they both got screwed….
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s highest court rejected on Tuesday an appeal by opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim against a 2014 sodomy conviction and upheld a five-year prison term that will likely end a political career marked by controversy.
Anwar was charged for having anal penetration with his then personal aide, 30 year old Saiful Azlan. The prosecution case was based mainly on the sperm sample found in Saiful’s anus. Anwar’s defence had been that the sample had been contaminated.
Meanwhile, Malaysian riot police are on stand-by to prevent any untoward incident by Anwar’s supporters who have been camping in the centre of KL since the previous night. The Chief of Police has warned them to disperse.
Anwar’s sodomy trial has been lambasted by many quarters as politically motivated.
Human Rights Watch decried what it called Anwar’s persecution. “Prime Minister Najib Razak’s government has persisted in its politically-motivated prosecution of opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim at the expense of democratic freedoms and the rights to non-discrimination and privacy for all Malaysians,” said Phil Robertson, deputy Asia director for the group.
“Allowing this travesty of justice to stand will further undermine respect for rights and democracy in Malaysia.”
