A long, long time ago when there weren’t any Hotel 81, there was the Botanic Gardens where couples went to make love and peeping toms went to peep.
That’s why when the Botanic Gardens was named a UNESCO world heritage site, many uncles and aunties jumped with joy and said in unison; `We are so happy because that place has so many pleasant memories for us.”
We know what you mean. *wink
The Botanic Gardens, with a 150 years of history will become only the third garden in the world to be named as a world heritage site. And it is the first in Asia to win the accolade.
Already the reception by Singaporeans has been overwhelming with crowds reportedly visiting the garden in droves over the weekend and there have already been whispers by some government officials to control the number of visitors to protect the garden from being trampled.
Presently entry to the garden is free. We sure hope that this will remain so although we will not be holding our breath.
